Please note; Unfortunately due to the nature and age of the building, there is no lift access and the studio is on the first floor and requires access via one set of stairs.
Working directly from a live model throughout the week, students will be guided step-by-step through the complete portrait painting process, from the initial block-in to the final refinements. Whether you are new to portrait painting or already have experience, Sofia will help you build confidence and strengthen your understanding of the key principles that bring a portrait to life.
The focus of the workshop will be on achieving a strong likeness, understanding value relationships, and developing clean, harmonious colour mixing. Students will work on a single portrait over the five days, allowing time to fully engage with the process and make meaningful progress in their work.
Teaching will be highly personalised, with plenty of one-to-one guidance and individual critiques throughout the week. Group demonstrations will cover topics such as skull anatomy and colour theory, providing students with a deeper understanding of both the structure of the head and the practical application of colour in portrait painting.
This workshop is suitable for artists of all levels. Whether you’re picking up a paintbrush for the first time or looking to refine your existing skills, you’ll receive support and encouragement throughout the week in a friendly and focused studio environment.
Sofia is a classically trained artist working across Surrey and London. She studied for four years at the London Atelier of Representational Art (LARA), where she later became Director of Studies.
Her work has been exhibited widely and recognised through a number of prestigious awards and exhibitions, including selection for the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery (formerly the BP Portrait Award).
Alongside her fine art practice, Sofia works within the film and television industry, creating paintings and drawings for productions with companies including Netflix, Apple TV and Sky.
Passionate about teaching, Sofia has extensive experience working with artists at every stage of their journey. Known for her approachable and encouraging teaching style, she enjoys helping students develop their skills, gain confidence, and discover new ways of seeing and understanding portraiture.
